Get the Best Voice for SpellSprout
SpellSprout pronounces every word and sentence using the speech voices built
into your iPhone or iPad — nothing is sent to the internet, and pronunciation
works fully offline.
Most devices start with a compact default voice. Apple also offers **free
Enhanced and Premium voices** that sound dramatically clearer and more
natural — a real difference for a listen-and-spell app. Downloading one takes
about two minutes, and SpellSprout uses it automatically.
Download a better voice (free, ~2 minutes)
- Open the Settings app on the iPhone or iPad your child uses
- Go to Accessibility → Read & Speak → Voices

- Tap English, then choose your region (e.g. English (US))
- Pick a voice and tap the download icon next to its Enhanced or
Premium version — Samantha (Enhanced) and Ava (Premium) are
popular, clear choices
- Wait for the download to finish (voices are a few hundred MB — Wi-Fi
recommended), then tap the voice to select it
That's it. The next time your child practices, SpellSprout automatically picks
the highest-quality English voice on the device.
Tips
- Preview before downloading: tap a voice's name to hear a sample.
- Premium beats Enhanced where available — if you see both, Premium is
the newer, most natural tier.
- Speech speed is separate: adjust it inside SpellSprout under
Settings → Audio, where you can also test how words sound.
- Voices live on the device, so practice stays completely offline — nothing
about your child ever leaves the device, including their practice audio.
Troubleshooting
- Still hearing the robotic voice? Make sure the downloaded voice is
selected (tap it in the Voices list), then force-close and reopen
SpellSprout.
- No room to download? Enhanced voices need a few hundred MB free.
You can remove other downloaded voices from the same screen with a swipe.
